Officers from Safer Communities would like to let you know about recent police impersonation scams and how to avoid them.
The scams see people receive a call from a person claiming to be a police officer alerting them to fraudulent activity on their account. During the call, personal questions are asked for "security reasons". In some cases, the victim is instructed to visit their bank to withdraw a four figure sum of money and pass it to a third person.
Police officers and your bank will NEVER:
- Ask for your bank card PIN number
- Ask you to transfer money from your account
- Ask you to withdraw cash or buy foreign currency
- Ask you to hand cash or bank cards to a courier or anyone else
- Ask you to pay a fine or fee to them or a third party over the phone or online
You can verify the authenticity of any contact from Police Scotland by taking a note of the officer's name and shoulder number and contacting 101.
