Healthy Homes, Healthy Futures
In September, Scottish Housing Day 2026 highlighted the importance of Healthy Homes, Healthy Futures and the positive impact that good-quality housing can have on our physical and mental wellbeing.
As part of Damp & Mould Awareness Week 2026, we're continuing that conversation by sharing practical advice to help customers keep their homes healthy, recognise the early signs of damp and mould, and know when to contact us.
A healthy home is about more than comfort. It can help protect your wellbeing, reduce condensation and moisture build-up, and prevent small issues from becoming bigger problems.
Top Tips for a Healthier Home
🌬️ Ventilate your home regularly
• Use extractor fans when cooking or bathing where available.
• Open windows for a short time each day where possible – purge ventilation is more effective than constant air changes.
• Keep trickle vents open if your windows have them.
• Avoid blocking air vents.
💧 Manage everyday moisture
• Put lids on pots and pans when cooking.
• Wipe condensation from windows and window sills.
• Dry clothes outdoors where possible or in a well-ventilated room.
• Close the bathroom door when showering and use the extractor fan.
🌡️ Keep your home comfortably heated
• Consistent background heating can help reduce condensation.
• Try to avoid large fluctuations in temperature where possible.
🔍 Look out for early warning signs
• Damp patches on walls or ceilings.
• Mould growth around windows, walls or behind furniture.
• Water leaks or water staining.
• Musty smells.
• Excessive condensation that keeps returning.
